Oulu Space Jam Collective memory Stick (Self Released)

OSJC are from Oulu, Finland and have been making and releasing jams on the internet since 2014.  They recently released their 24th session and also this memory stick which comes in a special small case, signed and numbered. It features all 24 sessions, many videos and the covers for the artwork they have made. I am about half way listening through the audio and it is all really high quality in sound. Most of the music is instrumental music with guitar, bass and drums. There are also some other instruments like synthesizers, flute, sitar, etc.. on other tracks but mostly it is high quality space rock jams. There are also some jams with acoustic guitars, flue, synths and sitar and vocals as well. Lot of amazing stuff, wow…  They only made 30 of these so, hurry..

Bättre Lyss- Till den Stäng som brast än att aldrig spänna en Båge (Sommer SOMM041)

Bättre Lyss was a one off project released on a private LP pressing in 1975 in Sweden. It was recorded in 1973-74. It featured ex-LIFE guitarist Anders Nordh. The band was basically a trio of Rolf Hammarlund on vocals and bass, Christer Palmquist on vocals, acoustic guitars, piano and Rolf Johansson on drums.  Anders came in and played guitar as well as some other guests (Ulf, Bo, Knutte). The liner notes say it was recorded on a 2 track machine.  This reissue says it is “master tape sound”, which means they did not have the master tapes. It was probably sourced from a mint copy of the vinyl then.  The 11 songs are all sung in Swedish. Göta Lejon starts things off with a heavy guitar riff with a bit dark feeling to it the way it is played with the bass. Occasionally the organ will appear between verses and later switches to piano as the track slows down. After the next sung part, a flute solo then multiple guitar solos follows for a great ending. Emma is an acoustic track with piano but electric guitar solos. Vidsel-sthlm, Enkel also features some piano and acoustic guitars but is also pretty laid back. A very nice guitar solo on this track when it gets a bit more upbeat. Anna sort of reminds me of Elton John. Sagan om Viggen starts with some Thin Lizzy like harmony guitars but then becomes more traditionally Swedish sounding with a heavy guitar riff and bass line. One of the heavier tracks with a very nice organ solo on this track and dual guitar solos at the end (hear the track below).

Drömflickan is a short ballad with some beautiful guitar lines and a great vocal. Vapnet brings back a heavier guitar (briefly) before the piano and vocals take the lead before the dual lead harmony guitars. Tredje Riket features some cool guitar, the way he uses the volume knob but this is basically a piano ballad. Ansvaret has a bit different sound production and starts with a guitar solo before the vocals and acoustic guitar kicks in. Short number. Chaú Gaí starts with a short electric solo before the acoustic guitar and vocals kick in. Every now and then a heavy guitar riff kicks in and we get some nice dual guitar parts as well which harmonize nicely with the singing at times. K-E Andersson is the last track and is primarily acoustic guitar and vocals to start and then the band joins in. A happy sing along to end the record with the whole band joining in on the vocals (maybe?).

If you understand Swedish you would get a lot more out of the record for sure. This is an enjoyable rock album from the 70s but it is not psychedelic, that progressive or hard rocking, really. Most of it is pretty laid back with a couple of hard rock tracks.

Spatial Moods- Terra (Clostridium CR033)

Spatial Moods is a new mostly instrumental band from Lima, Peru. The band is lead by guitarist Jorge Apaza, who also recorded, mixed and mastered the record. Side A is studio material, from the bands EP called Terra. Side B is live from the Cueva Sessions recorded May 26th, 2014).  The mastering or mix job is very bass heavy, I had to nearly turn my subwoofer off to make it listenable. The labels for the sides are just two images and each side is 5 tracks and since the music is all-instrumental it is impossible to know which side is which. What I write below might be for the opposite sides. Sorry but it is really stupid to not label the sides when both have 5 tracks.

Side A (?) starts with Jupiter and some intense bass and spacey guitars. Habasis features some delay guitars and synths underneath as the bass and drums slowly increase the pace of the track.  The synth is almost like a siren in the background as the guitar freaks out and is tortured a bit. Trippy. Venus has a strange start with an uncertain direction and far out noodling and some vocalizations in the background. Really crazy fucked up guitar on this one and quite in your face. A bit too much this one, as there is a total disconnect between the drums/bass and guitars. Cha 110913 has some spacey stuff mixed way to the back as the jam sort of takes shape and Jorge lets rip his most intense solo yet. Sedna ends the side and starts with a faded up bass line before the lead guitar plays a pretty normal more melodic solo. Some strange stuff going on in the background as the intensity of the guitar increases. The pace of the track slows down towards the end.

Side B (?) starts with Mom & Goliardos and features some really cool spacey delay guitars over the powerful bass line and drums. Arturo (2nd guitar and synths), is making some spacey sounds out there as well and then a heavier guitar riff takes the track to a new level while the really spacey guitar digs into your brain. Cool psychedelic track.  Papá, por qué me hiciste eso?  You can hear the two guitars more clearly, one making spaced out sounds and the other playing the melody line. When Jorge kicks in with the lead, you are taken in another direction. There is some really intense drumming (I don’t really like the sound of the drums though, sorry) on this jam track as well. Los Gritos de Hernan features a sort of funky wah guitar in the front and a more spacey guitar mixed far to the back. A lot of energy in this hard hitting track with a epic classic rock like guitar solo at the end. Continnum & Vesbujo has some really psychedelic guitar and it is mixed in a cool way. It gets funky at the end. Adios ends side B and is a quite fast track with a better drum mix and the bass mixed more into the track and not so in your face. Guitar is far out, man. If you like to hear some very intense guitar playing you will probably dig this release. Pretty cool stuff.
